They Might Be Giants

DURATION 1 hour 30 minutes
LOCATION Elm Street Stage, New Haven Green
Bring the kids to hear the Grammy Award-winning band They Might Be Giants! The Brooklyn group started in 1982 as an alternative rock duo; John Linnell and John Flansburgh have since expanded their unconventional and experimental style to children’s songs and as the theme music for several television programs, including “Malcolm in the Middle” and “The Daily Show with Jon Stewart”.

2009 Grammy Winner (Best Musical Album for Children) - “Here Come the 123s”

YAY! We love They Might Be Giants. We love New Haven. We are most excited that these two wonderful entities shall meet. Thanks, thanks, thanks to the IFA&I folks for bringing John & John here. My family will be on there for sure.

Can’t wait to see them with my kids. Thanks for coordinating it!! We saw them live in NY and it was a blast for our kids and us parents. Even the kids are singing Istanbul (Not Constantinople)….

I so psyched TMBG are coming back!!! I’m thinking this is a regular show, not a kids show. I hope so! Yay either way!!!

Hi all…just to clarify. This is definitely TMGB kids show. It is an early evening family friendly curtain at 6 pm. So pack a picnic dinner and come down to the New Haven Green. Please spread the word. We want to welcome TMGB to a packed Green. Glad you’re all excited. Mary Lou

The They Might Be Giants show on June 14 is a performance of their “kids” show but promises to be a great show for kids of all ages

YAY! The last time I saw TMBG was in the early 90’s at Toad’s Place. Now I’m looking forward to taking my daughter to see them live.

We are so excited! The whole family loves John and John, and our calendar is covered with huge TMBGs! Oldest kid is 23, youngest is 5, and they’ve all seen TMBG as their first concert. We’ll be there!

I’ll be tailgating with sippies and nutritious snacks, possibly an impromptu puppet show out of my minivan. I don’t know who will enjoy it more, my kids or their mom.

We taught our son “Istanbul” when he was 2 – a great party trick! (That and the “Young Frankenstein” version of “Puttin’ on the Ritz.”) Now he’s 5 and still knows every word to both. Looking forward to it.

My auntie turned me on to TMBG after Flood when I was eleven. My first rock show was in Port Chester, NY – ‘93 maybe?
12 Shows later and 29 years OLD I can’t keep up with the twenty-somethings, or the teens or the kids or the tots on their parent’s shoulders, but I feel like I should show up, cuase they keep showing up with ever-better stagecraft, songwriting and hope for the future of music. The Green is a hip & happening venue and I’ll do my best to drag my friends and their toddlers out to enjoy the evening. Thanks for your support.

Woolsey Hall is not very far from the green at all. It is on the corner of College and Grove, but it doesn’t look like they’ll need to move the show.

What a great show. That was definitely the most kids I have seen on the green and one of the largest crowds overall. My son had a great time.

TMBG’s act emphasised, as they always do, having fun above impressing or having to feel embarrassed. John, John, and band sing about what they want, how they want to. Happily, even their children’s music is sophisticated rock, a far cry from the Raffi’s and children’s artists of my youth. This is because TMBG aren’t really a kids’ band: they’re a band for and by adults that sings about what they want, not what people dictate, and right now they’re singing for their children. Their carefree attitude, fun setlist (which even included classic “Particle Man” for my generation), and most sincere participation by a touring band that I’ve ever seen combined to form an act that I’d be happy to pay to see. It’s fun without pretensions of more, even though there is more to back it up.
