Ideas
Jonah Lehrer: Proust Was
A Neuroscientist
FRI June 26 at 5:30pm FREE

DURATION 1 hour 30 minutes
LOCATION Yale Center for British Art, 1080 Chapel Street
Author and editor at large for Seed Magazine, Jonah Lehrer demonstrates that science is not the only path to knowledge, and that when it comes to understanding the brain, art got there first. Lehrer shows how a group of 19th and 20th century artists each discovered an essential truth about the mind that neuroscience is only now rediscovering. Lehrer will be joined by Paul Bloom, Professor of Psychology at Yale University.

All Ideas events at the Festival are free, but you can purchase an Ideas Insider Pass to guarantee your seat up to 15 minutes before the scheduled start time of all Ideas events. As an added benefit, you will be invited to attend a special post-Festival discussion with the programming staff to talk about plans for the 2010 Festival. Buy an Ideas Insider Pass for $35 online or at the Shubert Theater Box Office (247 College Street, New Haven): 203.562.5666 or 888.736.2663.

On a rainy, Friday afternoon in the middle of summer, I found myself sitting in on a lecture about Proust and neuroscience. Yes, I thought I was insane too, but I wasn’t the only one waiting to hear Jonah Lehrer talk. The place was packed! Both the auditorium and the space where it was (i believe) simulcasted. Lehrer, a young and might i add cute gentleman of 25 gave an engaging lecture about neuroscience and literature and how the latter has alluded to many scientific theories, proven years later by scientists. I found it very interesting and it only affirmed my love of Literature. While Lehrer did not sing or dance, he was able to captivate a soaked audience with the literature of Proust and Gertrude Stein. Now, feeling a bit more intelligent than I did a few days ago, I wish I had the IQ to take on a neuroscience degree and Jonah’s phone number.
