We're thrilled to announce the artists and thinkers who will be joining us in New Haven this June. This year's festival is filled with SERIOUS FUN: It's a festival packed with seriously good performances and dialogues that are also a whole lot of fun. The Festival is a place to tickle your senses, engage your mind, find inspiration, and take off on an adventure. We invite you to come play: come see where your wits take you. A dazzling evening of song that honors the music and spirit of great women in jazz, folk, r&b, gospel, and the blues. Featuring the music of Miriam Makeba, Odetta, Billy Holiday, and Lauryn Hill, as well as original music by Kidjo, Reeves, and Wright.

A one-of-a-kind street marching band that brings ambitious music to the masses in an exciting, take-over-the-crowd performance. Featuring music from the likes of Frank Zappa and Björk, with choreography by Susan Marshall.

The Grammy-nominated Carolina Chocolate Drops are the newest and youngest players in a long line of Black string bands. Rolling Stone Magazine says, “The Carolina Chocolate Drops are…revisiting, with a joyful vengeance, black string-band and jugband music of the ’20s and ’30s—the dirt-floor dance electricity of the Mississippi Sheiks and Cannon’s Jug Stompers.” Opening act: Caravan of Thieves.

A sensational double bill concert that crosses boundaries: Red Baraat melds the infectious North Indian rhythm Bhangra with a host of sounds—funk, go-go, Latin, and jazz. Noori is known as one of the most energetic and entertaining live acts on the Pakistani music scene—a rocking rush of adrenaline that comes straight from the heart!

Rosanne Cash is an icon of country rock whose earthy sound is both magical and real: it is gritty and powerful, yet intimate and honest. She has recorded eleven No. 1 singles, blurring the lines between country, rock, roots, and pop. Her performance of The List—in the open air on the closing night of the Festival—shows her considerable talent and appeal. The List is a deeply personal album: a paean to her father, Johnny Cash.

love fail is the newest evening-length theater work from Pulitzer Prize-winning composer David Lang. Sung by the unearthly voices of legendary vocal ensemble Anonymous 4, love fail is a tour de force of storytelling, weaving together snippets of medieval courtly love narratives, short stories by MacArthur Fellowship Award-winning author Lydia Davis, scraps from the libretto of Wagner’s opera Tristan and Isolde, and text by Lang himself. Presented in association with Yale Repertory Theatre.

The Yuval Ron Ensemble unites the sacred music traditions of Judaism, Sufism, and the Armenian Church into an unusual mystical, spiritual and inspiring musical celebration. The ensemble of musicians and dancers includes Arabic, Jewish and Christian artists. Presented in association with the Global Conference of Chaplains in Higher Education.


Yale International Choral Festival

Presented in association with the Yale Glee Club, Yale School of Music, and the Yale Alumni Chorus Foundation.

Nothing Is Impossible

Join Philippe Petit—the universal poet laureate of the high wire—as he reflects on risk, motivation, and the unexpected, and talks about magic, lock-picking, street juggling, and his approach to opening up the world’s imagination, one step at a time.

A screening of the Academy Award-winning documentary about Petit, Man on Wire, will precede the Ideas lecture at the Yale University Art Gallery at 11AM.

Five Ancient Secrets to Happiness and the Good Life

JUNE 17 (3PM), Yale University Art Gallery) FREE

Yale philosophy and cognitive science professor Tamar Gendler explores how we can learn from 2,500 years of thought to make life more meaningful and fulfilling, shares the insights of ancient Greek and Roman thinkers such as Socrates, Plato, and Cicero, along with contemporary discoveries from psychology and neuroscience.

African-American Dance and the Measure of Culture

Guided by the premise that dance is a barometer of society, Brenda Dixon Gottschild gauges the pulse of contemporary American performance: using dance as the focus and race the parameter, she reveals Africanisms in modern and postmodern dance and in American ballet.

On the eve of the London 2012 Olympics and its associated cultural festivals, Graham Sheffield CBE, of the British Council, shares stories and insights about the power of art and culture to connect the global to the local.

SCIENTIFIC INSIGHTS INTO COOPERATION & EVOLUTION
JUNE 21 (5:30PM), Yale University Art Gallery FREE

Scientists David Lynn and Martha Grover from the NSF/NASA Center for Chemical Evolution share facts and patterns from the natural world. They will discuss how genome sequencing over the last several years has revealed a vast and dynamic molecular world where the molecular cooperation and intelligence behavior drives selection and physical change to give birth to living systems.

SING THE TRUTH!:
Reflections on Justice and Freedom’s Journey with Rev. Bernard Lafayette

JUNE 23 (3PM), Yale University Art Gallery FREE

Our Festival opening night concert, Sing the Truth!, gives voice to the legacy of the civil rights journey here in Connecticut – in this Ideas program, Rev. Dr. Bernard Lafayette Jr., a civil rights activist and an authority on nonviolent social change, will give a keynote address and share his journey with Judge Constance Baker Motley.

SING THE TRUTH!:
Reflections on Art & Freedom’s Journey with Winfred Rembert

JUNE 24 (3PM), Yale University Art Gallery FREE

Explore the links from the civil rights era to the present, and understand the cultural and artistic context that informs the practice and journey of New Haven’s own Winfred Rembert. The program will begin with the screening of the documentary film All Me: The Life and Times of Winfred Rembert, followed by discussion with Rembert moderated by Yale University Art Gallery directory Jock Reynolds.

MUSIC OF THE PEOPLE:
Artists Talk about Music Inspiring Change

JUNE 26 (5:30PM), Yale Center for British Art FREE

Siddhartha Mitter, a noted cultural critic, is joined by artists from the bands Noori and Red Baraat (performing at the Festival on June 24) and Asphalt Orchestra (performing at the Festival on Sun, June 17) for a conversation about music as a tool for radical transformation in today’s changing worlds, both in the United States and around the globe. Sociologist and scholar of cultural politics Sujatha Fernandes joins the discussion.

SLATE'S POLITICAL GABFEST
JUNE 27 (5:30PM), Yale Center for British Art FREE

Emily Bazelon, John Dickerson, and David Plotz, eminent editors of the online magazine Slate, bring their acclaimed weekly political podcast to the Festival for a session recorded live in New Haven. They will discuss the upcoming November elections and summer conventions, President Obama, and other hot political stories of the week.

HA JIN & DAVID HENRY HWANG:
The US-China Literary Landscape

JUNE 28 (5:30PM), Yale University Art Gallery FREE

David Henry Hwang is the Tony Award-winning playwright of M. Butterfly, whose acclaimed new play Chinglish (2011) was the first Broadway play to be performed in both Mandarin and English. Ha Jin is the winner of the National Book Award for Waiting, twice winner of the PEN/Faulkner award, and celebrated author of short stories, poetry and fiction, most recently of Nanjing Requiem. Both will read from their current work and talk about the intersection of contemporary writing, artistic diaspora and cultural perspectives on China.

The Wisdom & Science of Traditional Foods

JUNE 30 (3PM), Yale University Art Gallery FREE

Daphne Miller, MD is the author of The Jungle Effect, a unique travelogue of healthy eating. Her understanding of the interconnectedness of food, the environment and health reveal essential clues to our understanding of diet and lifestyle. She will discuss food cultures from around the world that are still free of modern chronic diseases and to learn what they can teach us as we seek to develop our own healthy habits.

Group Intelligence is part art, part science experiment, in which the audience joins together with MP3 players: At the designated time, audience members start their MP3 units, each playing a different a soundtrack of music, narration, and instructions for each audience member to perform specific actions. The audience both creates and experiences images of the creation of the world and the emergence of life.
