Parenthood is branded on social media as the accessory of the moment: hoards of people posting perfect pictures on social media of their perfect families and perfect lives. But what about the couples for whom having a child raises an entire debate? In Ad Infinitum’s No Kids, a real-life couple will share their deeply personal journey to answer the question: as a gay couple, should they have children?
Performers, creators and directors of the show, George Mann and Nir Paldi, created the show from their discussions, memories of the past, and visions of the future, spinning around the “kids or no kids” dilemma bringing in adoption, surrogacy, coparenting, the environmental impact, and ethical challenges – all set to a lively Madonna soundtrack.
Said George Mann: “Making No Kids challenged us as theatremakers, but also as a couple. Creative disagreements were profound, the fears and anxieties were real, and digging into our past opened up old wounds. We loved performing the show in Edinburgh, but we also felt the need to continue developing No Kids – to push ourselves to delve deeper into the themes of the show and further explore our two characters as stage personas and where that could take the piece.”
The show had its first outing at Edinburgh Festival Fringe and will tour the UK from 24 January to 29 March, heading to Battersea Arts Centre (London), Tobacco Factory (Bristol), The Lowry (Salford) and dates at Liverpool, Ormskirk, Petersfield and Buckingham.
