Imagine a different type of cultural movement with New Haven-based Movimiento Cultural Afro-Continental (MCAC), Inc., a cultural, arts and community-based organization dedicated to entertaining and educating on Puerto Rico’s rich African-based folklore, music, and dance. They especially focus on the Bomba, a style of music and dance that has its roots in the island’s legacy of African slavery, but has been converted into an ecstatic expression of Puerto Rican tradition and culture. With members that have engaged in this style of expression for decades, catching Movimiento Cultural on the mainstage is your all-inclusive ticket to an evolving art form.

PLEASE NOTE: By reserving this event, you are reserving a curated evening presented on the mainstage. We hope you will join us for the full evening, but you may choose to attend single events. The events included in this curated evening are:

Watch Movimiento Cultural perform "María Luisa" at Puerto Ricans United's Commemoration of the Abolishment of Slavery in Puerto Rico at Casa Otoñal in New Haven on March 23, 2019.

Movimiento Cultural Afro-Continental (MCAC), Inc.

Movimiento Cultural Afro-Continental (MCAC), Inc., is a cultural, arts and community based organization. Our mission is to educate people across Connecticut about Puerto Rico’s rich African-based folklore, music, dance, and other art forms, especially the Bomba, which is the oldest Puerto Rican dance and music style rooted in resistance and dating back to the days of slavery.  The goal is to build and foster racial tolerance, relationships, alliances, and cultural awareness among community groups.  MCAC's group leaders are highly respected cultural workers who have engaged in this art form for decades.
