Bees give us so much, from berries to flowers to honey. Responsible for pollinating a full one-third of the food we eat, bees are under threat, with a 60% decrease in population since the ‘40s. Learn all about honey bees, beekeeping, and pollinator-friendly flowers and herbs in this tutorial, led by the Huneebee Project, a nonprofit social enterprise that installs beehives and pollinator friendly gardens in community spaces while providing equitable employment opportunities to local youth. Suit up and experience opening and inspecting an established beehive located in the Hill neighborhood of New Haven while learning all about beekeeping and the Huneebee Project.

Sarah Taylor

Founder/ Executive Director

Sarah is a licensed clinical social worker with experience providing trauma-focused child and family therapy in both NYC and New Haven, in addition to free social work services to families with Manhattan Family Court and foster care involvement. After relocating to Connecticut in 2016, Sarah quickly discovered beekeeping and beeswax candle making. She set out to bring the bees’ magic to youth and young adults in the New Haven area. Sarah has her MSW from New York University, a certificate in Integrative Trauma Studies from the National Institute for the Psychotherapies, and completed a fellowship in Advanced Clinical Social Work at the Yale Child Study Center in June 2019. She presently works with children and families at the Child Study Center’s Intensive In-Home Child and Adolescent Psychiatric Services (IICAPS) program.

Noah Macy

Arthur Street Lead Beekeeper

Noah has always found bugs fascinating, and he got hooked on beekeeping at the age of seven when his mother started an apiary in their backyard. A few years later, he was running his own hives at home and around his neighborhood in Atlanta, and he became a master beekeeper through the University of Georgia in 2013. Beekeeping, bees, and beekeepers taught Noah innumerable lessons about life and himself as he grew up, so he's thrilled to be part of Huneebee Project's mission to engage youth in beekeeping. He loves spending Saturdays in the hives at the Arthur Street apiary, smelling the smoke mingle with beeswax and listening to the sounds of the colonies change with the season.

Alex Guzman

Arthur Street bee apprentice

Alex Graduated from the Beekeepers in Residence training program in the Summer of 2019. A senior at Eli Whitney Technical High School, she was recommended to Huneebee Project by her therapist. Alex is a resident of New Haven, always ready to learn and has interest in Graphic Design. Alex has helped with photographing the gardens and honey bee hives in addition to maintaining Huneebee Project social media accounts. She also assists in maintaining the hives in the Arthur Street Garden. In her spare time, she enjoys making posters of different things and photoshopping the photographs she takes."
