As we continue to adapt to social isolation, the Festival strives to maintain hope and positivity. Today, we are recognizing four New Haven Heroes who are going above and beyond to help our community get through these uncertain times.
Our city came together to create Together New Haven (#togethernewhaven) as a way to highlight our community's ability to stay strong and help one another. Inspired by #togethernewhaven, the staff of the International Festival of Arts & Ideas highlights four local heroes in one of many future posts. Thank you for all you do!
Petisia Adger, founder and owner of UrbanGrants4Us, nominated by Phillip Modeen, the Young Minds Librarian of the Stetson Branch of the New Haven Free Public Library.
"I would like nominate Petisia Adger, founder and owner of UrbanGrants4Us. She is has been on it from beginning of this pandemic providing resources and information to the public through her website and mailing list. If anyone isn't on her list, they should be. It has been an excellent resource. Petisia has also facilitated incredible programming at Stetson Branch Library and continues to shine through her website."
The Semilla Collective, CT Core, MakeHaven, and Haven's Harvest, nominated by Elizabeth Nearing, the Festival's Curator of Ideas Programming.
"The Semilla Collective is a team of organizers and volunteers working year-round to advocate for immigrant rights in New Haven. In this time, they've stepped up as one of the leading mutual aid groups working to get food to some our most vulnerable neighbors. I had the great privilege of getting to volunteer with them last week, dropping off boxes of groceries, including freshly grown food and pantry staples. You can read more about them, and the fantastic effort organized by CT Core, here. I'm so grateful to live in a city with organizers that lead with such vigor and heart! Thank you to Eden Almasude, Luis Luna, Ariana Shapiro, Sarah Eppler-Epstein, and the many volunteers that make this happen!"
"MakeHaven, JR Logan, Kate Cebik, and Lior Trestman: this brilliant team has converted their community maker's space to create much-needed equipment for the Covid19 pandemic. They're harnessing community knowledge and power to design and make cloth masks, face shields, intubation shields, ventilators, and more. Magical Rapid Response!"
"Lori Martin is the founder and executive director of Haven's Harvest, an organization that uses "excess" food and delivers it with the help of volunteers. Rather than let food go to waste, they find businesses with food surplus and find use for it advocating for an increase in food donations and decrease in food waste."

The City will hope to notify the event organizer 2 weeks in advance of their event if it needs to be postponed or cancelled.
